Colin telephoned Superintendent Manners and told him that William Adams was no longer driving the Sierra previously reported as his, but had been seen in a small Fiat, and he gave the number, mentioning the district.
Manners was irritated. The old boy had got a bee in his wig about Adams, and though Manners agreed that such dangerous men should not be at large, or, if released, should be supervised – but not by the police, who had too much to do as it was, catching other villains – he thought the matter of no consequence. He made sure that the judge was not reporting harassment or nuisance, was he? Colin had to reply – because to do otherwise would be to admit his own deception, minor though it was – that no, he wasn’t. Mrs Kent’s letter was another matter, but it was connected with himself; Adams was not threatening her.
Manners pointed out, respectfully, that alas, he could not reform the law to make Adams more accountable; perhaps the judge was the person to do that. He would have the car checked and would alert the police in the area given as the owner’s address, so that they could keep Adams’ name in their minds. At the moment, with a serious case of arson and an impending drugs raid on his patch, he could not regard the matter as urgent.
Felicity had returned from her visit to London laden with carrier bags. She presented Colin with a wodge of receipts attached to her list of expenditure. He knew there would be no errors: nevertheless, he went through them all punctiliously, ready for when the bills arrived. For certain approved shopping of this nature, she was allowed to use a charge card. While she sorted the slips, she had wondered what would happen if she bought a diamond ring or some other expensive item which she could then sell, and take off on the proceeds. She knew there was a credit limit but it was high, more than a thousand pounds – nearer two, she thought. Could he, or would he, have her pursued and make her give it back? Not without causing a notable scandal. He would not openly accuse her of theft.
She thought of the problems she heard other women discuss. Sex seemed to be a perennial worry – too much, or else too little, were the complaints. Most of the women she knew seemed to be able to spend at least small sums freely. She had never heard anyone mention that their husbands checked bills minutely or that they were really short of housekeeping money. These women met one another for coffee and lunches in pubs, and were always ready to buy tickets in raffles for their various functions. But she didn’t advertise the restrictions imposed on her, so maybe there were others, also keeping quiet. Very few of the women she met socially had paid jobs, though some spent a lot of time in voluntary work.
